As can be read from the old manuscript, "Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal" (1887), the existence and properties of the parasite was well known by the people of Indonesia for a long time, especially in Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan.
In fact, records show ethnobotany, in Java in 1968, the parasite has been used as a cure measles, smallpox fire, diarrhea, hookworm, tumor, and cancer. No. According to Richter in Phytochemistry. 31 (1992), parasitic Loranthaceae and Viscaceae contains many flavonoids, such as chalcones, flavanones, c-glycoflavonols and flavan-3-ols. Aslinya, benalu dikenal sebagai penggemar tumbuhan perdu. Di situ ia biasa membentuk miliu (lingkungan sekitar) yang memberikan kesan rimbun, tidak teratur, dan kurang terawat.
Untuk memergoki benalu tak sulit. Anda bisa menemukannya di sekitar hutan, tepi jalan, kebun, bahkan tegalan. Tanaman ini berkembang biak dengan cara generatif dan vegetatif (cara pertama, lewat penyebaran biji, dianggap lebih baik dibandingkan dengan cara kedua).
Dalam Flora Malesiana vol. 13 (1997) ditegaskan, ada dua kelompok besar benalu, yakni dari keluarga Loranthaceae dan Viscaceae. Famili Loranthaceae punya 23 marga (dengan 200 jenis tanaman), di antaranya marga Dendrophthoe (21 jenis) dan marga Scurrula (8 jenis). Sedangkan Viscaceae punya empat marga (26 jenis).
Sebagai obat tradisional, masyarakat di berbagai negara sebenarnya sudah lama memanfaatkan benalu untuk menyembuhkan beragam penyakit. Seperti bisa dibaca dari naskah lawas, “Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal” (1887), keberadaan dan khasiat benalu ternyata sudah dikenal luas oleh orang Indonesia sejak lama, khususnya di Jawa, Sumatra, dan Kalimantan.
Faktanya, catatan-catatan etnobotani menunjukkan, di Jawa pada tahun 1968 benalu sudah digunakan sebagai obat penyakit cacar air, cacar api, diare, cacing tambang, tumor, dan kanker. Pada 1978 penelitian etnobotani juga memberitakan, benalu teh kering yang direbus airnya dapat diminum untuk menyembuhkan penyakit kanker rahim dan jenis kanker lainnya. Sedangkan pada tahun 1980, giliran benalu sawo yang dipercaya dapat menyembuhkan tumor payudara.
Lalu pada 1983 ditemukan fakta bahwa benalu jeruk nipis, benalu beringin, dan benalu teh dengan ramuan tertentu dapat menghalau tumor. Setahun kemudian, penelitian etnobotani sekali lagi menemukan fakta di lapangan, air hasil rebusan benalu dan daun tapak dara (Catharanthus roseus), jika diminum, ternyata dapat mengobati kanker.
Tahun 1995, penulis sempat mengunjungi Desa Gentasari, Kroya, Cilacap, untuk mengamati maraknya penggunaan benalu sebagai ramuan jamu di daerah itu. Dari hasil pengamatan itu, penulis sempat menemukan seorang penderita kanker usus yang berhasil sembuh dari penyakitnya, setelah meminum rebusan benalu mangga.
Tak hanya manjur di Indonesia, khasiat benalu juga dipercaya oleh masyarakat Malaysia, Filipina, dan Papua Nugini. Di negara-negara itu, benalu juga dimanfaatkan sebagai obat tradisional. Di Indocina, daun benalu Dendrophthoe pentandra (L.) Miq. sering diramu dengan teh, lalu diminum sebagai obat flu. Sedangkan larutan daun benalu Scurrula ghracififolia digunakan untuk mengobati rematik, bisul-bisul, serta memperkuat pertumbuhan gigi dan rambut. Jenis benalu lainnya, Viscum articulatum Burm. F direbus dan diminum dua kali sehari untuk mengobati bronkitis. Di Cina semua bagian dari benalu Scurrula parasitica, yang sudah dikeringkan, digunakan untuk memperkuat ginjal, menenangkan uterus sewaktu hamil, menguatkan tulang, mengurangi pembengkakan, menghilangkan rasa sakit punggung maupun lutut, serta menurunkan tekanan darah tinggi.
Orang Cina juga memanfaatkan benalu untuk pengobatan kelainan hati dan merangsang pertumbuhan rambut. Sedangkan Viscum articulatum dipercaya membantu mengatasi kelainan hati dan penyakit TBC (tuberkulosis).
Apa sebenarnya rahasia benalu, sehingga banyak dimanfaatkan orang sebagai obat beragam penyakit?

Keberadaan flavanoid itu didukung oleh zat-zat lain yang juga terdapat pada benalu, seperti proline, hydroproline, myo-inositol, dan chiroinosotils. Sementara benalu famili Loranthaceae diyakini banyak mengandung tanin. Senyawa ini terdapat pada tanaman benalu, berkat hasil kerja sama asam gallic dengan catechin, yang menyebabkan padatnya kadar tanin pada daun dan tangkai batang. Dalam ilmu farmasi, tanin kerap digunakan sebagai obat diare, penawar racun, antivirus, antikanker, dan anti-HIV.

Don't give the honey for your baby
Feeding honey to your baby could be harmful if he or she is younger than 12 months of age. Honey could be the cause of a rare type of food poisoning called infant botulism--a serious, even deadly, illness. Honey is the food most commonly found to contain the bacteria causing botulism. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that honey should not be added to the food, water, or formula that is fed to infants younger than 12 months of age. This recommendation includes foods processed with honey.Symptoms of infant botulism include weakness in the neck, arms, or legs; inability to suck or cry normally; inability to feed or swallow; and persistent constipation. The first symptom is constipation, which can appear three to 30 days following ingestion of honey. The next symptoms observed are listlessness, decreased appetite, and a weakened cry over the next several days. Gagging and sucking reflexes diminish and the child moves less and less. Infant botulism frequently causes an infant to have an unusual breathing pattern, which often requires putting the infant on a ventilator to help with breathing.
Most infants recover from botulism with hospital care. However, if infant botulism is not treated immediately, it could result in death. Hospital care is necessary. Identifying the botulism toxin in the stool is needed for proper diagnosis. This toxin can cause nerve damage for weeks or even months. Neither antibiotics nor antitoxin have proven beneficial in treating infant botulism and may even make the illness worse. There is also a link between infant botulism and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), because breathing is affected in the most severe stages of the illness. It is believed to be the cause of death in 10% of SIDS cases. As children get older, the stomach acid, bacteria, and the intestinal tract mature to make them less susceptible to the toxins that botulism spores produce. The single most effective way to prevent infant botulism is to avoid giving honey to infants younger than 12 months of age.
